Copal incense
Huastec (Teenek) copal for censing comes from the Protium copal. Also known as Elaphrium copal, Protium copal is a close relative of Bursera, and both are of the family Burseraceae. In addition to being the standard incense burned for most Huastec Mayan ritual offerings, and for censing the four directions, nodules of this copal are counted out into the corners during the house renewal ceremony and at the new year, recalling the protective function of modeled copal in Chortí granaries. It is also employed as a remedy for stomach pain, fright, and dizziness.
